Introducing SIGNUL – Our Consumer Beacon Product

Signul Beacon featuring IoT Core

Signul Beacon featuring IoT Core

Hello Developers!

It’s been too long, but we’ve been hard at work on a new product that we’ve introduced to the world called SIGNUL. As you can see in the photo above, SIGNUL uses the production version of our IoT Core Board!

Currently, the system is being crowd funded on Indiegogo, but in the weeks to come, we will be announcing development tools and new hardware based on SIGNUL and the IoT Core board. If you have questions or would like advance hardware, get in touch and we will be happy to get you more info!

Introducing IoT Core

IoT Core Beta Boards

We’re pleased to introduce our IoT Core Module!

This Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Module is a highly-versatile part that can be populated in a variety of configurations ranging from a BLE Beacon through to a full “Smartphone Control” solution when integrated with other electronic products.

Based on the TI CC2540/2541 SoC Architecture, the module exposes the following features:

- Bluetooth Low Energy Radio with Programmable Output Power
- 8051 Microcontroller with 8k RAM, and 256K Flash
- I2C, USB, and SPI (depending on specified configuration)
- 12-bit ADC
- GPIO Digital Pins, including 2 x 20mA high current drivers
- Can be used as a stand-alone module, or configured as a BLE Interface Coprocessor for other devices

IoT Core is currently undergoing final testing, FCC/CE approval, and final preparation for production. Shelf date for the module is August 2014.

Updates on Production Boards

We’re pleased to announce that Rev B of our IoTCore beta board has been submitted for fabrication. This board forms the foundation of our Beacon and Location Systems as well as providing a new platform for Bluetooth Low Energy development.

  • TI CC2540/2541 Core – SoC with MCU, 128-256K of Flash RAM and BLE Radio
  • SPI, I2C, and GPIO broken out via headers
  • Over-The-Air Firmware Upgrades
  • Optional USB Connectivity for Power or Data

We have envisioned the board to be a low-cost part that can be populated in various configurations for both prototype and production applications:

  • Bluetooth Low Energy Beacons with iBeacon technology
  • Sensor Control and Logging
  • Smartphone-Connected Devices and Control Systems
  • USB Gateway for PC’s and Micro-PC’s such as BeagleBone Black or Raspberry Pi
  • SPI Gateway for Arduino and other prototyping platforms

If you’re interested in working on this technology in our Beta program, please contact us to get the details.

Winners of our WhyBeacon? Contest

Thanks to everyone that entered our WhyBeacon? Contest. We’re happy to announce that we’ve selected our Top 5 ideas!

The submitters will all receive a free IoT Design Shop Beacon Development kit. Great work! Lots of creative stuff was submitted. You can check out the full thread in our forums.

Here are the Top 5:

#1 – (Submitted by The Coop) Create an app that provides an extra layer of security to certain apps the user chooses that will only start and run if a portable ibeacon device is available within range.

#2 – (Submitted by Mooja) Ibeacon integrated in paper advertising billboards that you find anywhere along roads, subways corridors. Movie poster, event festival…you get near the board and access instantly details about the event.
If the billboard is a digital screen, it could react when you get nearby.

(Tie for #3 – Guided Tours)
#3a – (Submitted by Blue) Museum/Art Gallery/City Self-Guided Tours: Allow people to get extra information on what they’re seeing. Maybe even give them access to a forum to comment on the work and see what other people are saying.
#3b – (Submitted by Sushmita) iBeacon paired with your cellphone can be used for museums, acquariums and zoos for a better guidance tour.

(Tie for #4 – We liked the airport idea)
#4a (Submitted by Desmond) Use iBeacons for malls and airports to direct people to shops of interest or their gates for departures.
#4b (Submitted by Ryan) For airports so I can quickly find my gate.

Thanks for your submissions all. Some really great iBeacon concepts! If you want help building them out, get in touch!
