We’re pleased to announce the WhyBeacon? contest!

To celebrate the launch of our developer portal, we’ll be giving away 5 of our iBeacon Dev Kits to the top 5 ideas for beacon deployments. The idea here is to share some ideas for great places that iBeacons can be used to get the creative beacon-juices flowing!

Post your idea to the thread – we’ll be choosing the winners on Thursday March 13th!

If you haven’t already seen the kits – check them out at our online shop!

There are too many options to pick just one! Here are a few fun ones:

Real Estate: Place an iBeacon at a house that’s for sale and allow people to get instant access to information and a virtual tour, save the details for later and maybe even send the info to their realtor so they can set up a showing.

Museum/Art Gallery/City Self-Guided Tours: Allow people to get extra information on what they’re seeing. Maybe even give them access to a forum to comment on the work and see what other people are saying.

Scavenger Hunt: People unlock content and clues to the mission to complete/iBeacon. It could take The Amazing Race to a whole new level. There are definitely some interesting next gen Geo-Caching applications as well.

Put iBeacons at home and at school so I can detect if the kid is in class or not.

Find keys, or other important items around the house.

Detect if artwork or other valuables have been moved or stolen.

Ensure that security gates for children or pets are not knocked over.

Use iBeacons for malls and airports to direct people to shops of interest or their gates for departures.

Set up beacons in university or high school classrooms to help new students find the right room.

Warehouses – stick a beacon on every shipment for easy discovery

Dine Out Vancouver – set up an app that notifies you when a Dine Out restaurant is nearby and show what they’ve got on special

Hi all,
Ibeacon integrated in paper advertising billboards that you find anywhere along roads, subways corridors.
Movie poster, event festival…you get near the board and access instantly details about the event.
If the billboard is a digital screen, it could react when you get nearby.

Ibeacon in a crowded festival. Help you track your friends easily without the need to call (two Much noise, Carrier network overloaded…) but also gain access to event portal instantly or get rewarded of goodies as you get near an ibeacon

For airports so I can quickly find my gate.

Also for the airlines so they can drop people that are rushing to catch their next flights (ie. they know they are on the way and estimated time of arrival).

1. Use iBeacon to keep a track of expected numbers to come in Roulette casino game which might help in winning.

2. iBeacon can be used in hospitals for maps and navigation purpose.

3. iBeacon paired with your cellphone can be used for museums, acquariums and zoos for a better guidance tour.

Create an app that provides an extra layer of security to certain apps the user chooses that will only start and run if a portable ibeacon device is available within range.
